Quick Review - Browning Trail Cameras Spec Ops FHD Extreme BTC 8FHD PX
Feb 21st 2017
We got a chance this last week to un-box and experiment a bit with the Browning Trail Cameras Spec Ops Extreme Model BTC 8FHD PX. This short review is a real world, common sense review for the guys and gals that like using trail cameras as a scouting tool and or keeping an inventory of their deer herd.
The first thing we noticed is that the Browning Spec ops FHD Extreme seems to trigger very fast. It does not have a problem catching things in motion. Birds, Gray Squirrels and Deer alike moving past this cam will be caught by this Browning Trail Camera. It does not seem to miss anything!
Next we also noticed that the detection is very good. We had many pictures of small animals from this camera in one week. It had no problem at all picking up the smallest bird or squirrel at a distance of 40 - 50 feet and deer much farther.
This camera comes with a 2" color viewing screen that makes viewing pictures and setting this camera up a breeze. The menu screen is a bit more simple to use with a viewing screen because you have a few separate selections on the menu versus having to scroll through every option available. The Browning Spec Ops Extreme does have Trail Cam, Video and Timelapse Plus modes similar to other Browning Trail Cameras. The Browning Spec Ops FHD Extreme has tons of adjustments that we think you could use this camera in many different locations and situations.
We used a 8 GB Sandisk Ultra card in this test but we would recommend going to a 16 GB or bigger if you want to do videos or have the camera set on 20 MP and have it out in the field for a few weeks or longer. We also used Energizer Lithium batteries and would recommend using a lithium type battery especially if you are going to be using the video mode a lot and or in bitter cold weather conditions. We expect to get roughly 6 - 9 months out of a set of good lithium batteries depending on your settings like video vs trail cam ect.
The only thing this camera came up a little short is the flash distance at night compared to the distance advertised. Browning Trail Cameras claims this game camera model will illuminate out to 80 feet when set on the long range setting. We found that in a real world situation where lets say a hunter would be wanting to know for instance which buck and how big the buck is the camera would be more limited to the 70 -75 foot range. Maybe with a little better aiming we could get to 80 feet plus we had the camera set up looking at a hillside which maybe didn't help matters.
All in all this is a fantastic trail camera with all the bells and whistles. If time permits we may add some videos to this review in the future. If you looking for a high performance black flash trail camera with all the options in the world there is no doubt Spec Ops Extreme from Browning is sure to be a top pick for hunters this 2017 season.
